Table Talk: Talking To Your Kids About White Supremacy

White Supremacy Propaganda, Extremism and Online Recruitment Tactics

Yesterday I read an article about parents talking to your “white sons” about how white supremacists are using the internet to recruit kids (White supremacists are recruiting white teens online). The article included a link for how to talk to your kids about this topic and why it’s important to do so (Propaganda, Extremism and Online Recruitment Tactics).

What struck me deeply was the article included a story about a Virginia family, who dismissed the signs of their son’s interests as he just had a deep interest in history. Until he killed two people and was charged with a hate crime.

We’re from Virginia, and my son has a deep interest in history and he’s a great kid. But as a Mom, I worry about that balance between protecting my teen son, while giving him a sense of trust and privacy in his own home. Plus this issue is impacting unsuspecting families all around the world. Whither it’s Islamic Extremists, or White Supremacy groups. We have to talk to our children and make them aware of the dangers. Continue reading

Bath-tub Contemplations

Bath-tub Contemplations

Thoughts From The Tub

So I’m sitting here doing some busy work and the boy, who’s home sick, once again comes out of the bath to share something he had been contemplating while his day in tub.

Momma, do you know what a fart is?

Mom: Yes it’s flatulence.

Boy: Ok, whatever that is.
A fart is your butt cheeks applauding your digestive system.

Mom: …can’t stop laughing! Yet another “poofie poofie” moment.

Storytelling – The Funniest Things

Olden Times KnightThinking In The Tub

So I’m sitting here trying to relax from a stressful week. Seriously stressful. I’m watching one of my favorite crime shows when the boy comes out of the bath. He’s standing behind the couch, with a towel wrapped around him, patiently waiting for a commercial to come on. Isn’t that thoughtful.

Then he starts his rambling. At first I honestly have no idea what he’s talking about. But I try to tune in.

“So I had one of those bathtubs moments and it made me think. Back in the olden times, what happened if you were in a suit of armor that was fully contained with your body.”

Ok..there are so many things that I don’t get about that sentence, but I’m imagining said suit of armor all the sudden in my head. Continue reading

More Than A Secret Sound For Teens

The Man and I had our son (the Prince) a little late in life. I went after the career, before I was interested in going after the family. What that means is that that Daddy person and I have to explain some things to the child about aging that most of the “Moms and Dads” of his friends at school don’t have to deal with. I’m old enough to be their Mom and in a very few cases, their Grand Mom.

We’re like all people getting older, things stop working well as we age. Right now today’s challenge is… we don’t hear as well as we did when we were younger. Ok so some of that comes from blaring the radio in the car when we were teens and twenty somethings. The point is, we’re constantly asking the Prince to repeat what he says and he’s constantly getting annoyed by it. He thinks it’s simply a matter of our paying more attention to him. It doesn’t dawn on him that we’re talking about biological science here and he needs to increase the volume of his voice. We’re getting old, come on kid, speak up.

This has become an opportunity to have a teaching moment and conduct an experiment that will help keep the Prince interested in science.

A few years ago I had heard about teens using their cell phones when they weren’t supposed to be, by turning off all sound and loading a sound file onto their phone that only they and other kids can hear,  The Mosquito Ringtone. Continue reading
