The “Cold” Sandwich

Tomato, Onion and Cheddar Sandwich

The “Cold” Sandwich

When my paternal grandmother passed, my sisters and I were given the task of going through her things. I discovered a box with recipes, something none of us thought she had. She was a great cook, but she never used a recipe, at least from what we could see.

Inside I found a little note written on a recipe card:
A Tennessee wives tale predicts if you have this 3 times a week, you can prevent the common cold. And beneath the recipe, was a note: “It works” and “From Fall to end of Winter“.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of whole wheat bread.
  • A slice of yellow raw onion.
  • A healthy serving of horseradish.
  • A slice of cheddar cheese.
  • Brown mustard
  • A slice of tomato
  • A decoration of lettuce.
    • * You can make this a ‘warm’ sandwich by toasting it in a toaster oven or conventional oven before you add the lettuce.
  • Salt and Pepper (you only need about 1 dash of salt).

Directions:

  • Spread the brown mustard on each slice of the bread.
  • Cut the onion slice into small cubes. You can dice the onion if you prefer.
  • In a small soup bowl, place the onion, salt and pepper to taste, with about 1 to 2 teaspoons of horseradish and mix thoroughly.
  • Spread the mix onto one side of the sandwich.
  • Top the onion with the cheese slice.
  • On the opposite side of the sandwich, place the leaf of lettuce.
If you want to toast your sandwich, leave off the lettuce until after toasting and place the leaf in the center of the sandwich.
  • Add the tomato on top of the lettuce.
  • Combine the sandwich and enjoy.

Serve:

  • Serve with apple or orange slices.
