Tracks all over the country are planning special events to honor 3-Time Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart in this last and final season of his NASCAR career. No one is giving him a bigger going away present than Indianapolis Motor Speedway, his home track and one of his top favorite tracks.

The track made the announcement today on their Twitter account:

A short track at IMS in honor of @TonyStewart? You heard right. The dirt arrives tomorrow!

IMS president Doug Boles said Tuesday, the speedway’s plan is to install a 3/16th-mile oval for Stewart’s media appearance July 5. Several dirt midget teams have been invited to try out the track. Presumably Tony will be given the first go around to christen the dirt in what could amount to an exhibition race.

IMS is hoping to enlarge the track after the July 5th presentation to support Sprint Car racing as well. Exactly when the enlargement construction will begin has not been determined yet. So stay tuned.

Some Twitter fans have already started their questioning of such a move, now that Tony will probably be in the NASCAR Chase for the Cup during this 2016 season, after his monumental win at Sonoma.

“Tony doesn’t want gifts, per se, but we thought this was a great way to marry his love for dirt-track racing with his love for racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” Boles told the IndyStar.

Boles went on to mention that Tony was told last week about the project. But did not share Smoke’s response to the news.

IMS isn’t planning on getting into the business of dirt track racing. But they are looking forward to hosting special events and maybe even a race during Sprint Week, the Indy500 and the Brickyard500.
